Construction
There are three basic methods of down comforter construction: sewn through Karo stitch, sewn through box constructions and baffled box construction. Sewn Through Construction: This construction method is accomplished by filling the shell of the comforter, then distributing the fill evenly throughout the blanket at which point either a box pattern is sewn through the comforter or a Karo stitch is sewn through the comforter. The Karo stitch allows for shifting of the down fill and the box construction keeps the down in 8" compartments to prevent any shifting of the down. Sewn through construction is the most economical construction method, and is a very good method of construction. Examples of a standard sewn through box stitch construction are the Avalon, Aberdeen, and Stratus comforters. The Olympic comforter offers a sewn through Karo stitch construction. True Baffled Box Construction: This construction method is accomplished by filling individual box chambers within the shell of the comforter. The benefit of this process is that it allows for a higher loft of the down fill, but the trade-off is that it costs more due to the extra labor involved in crafting the comforter. Generally comforters with higher fill powers will have a True Baffled box construction in order to optimize the lofting ability of the fill. Examples of comforter with the true Baffled box construction are the Mont Blanc and the Perfect Sleep comforters.
